Unleash the power of AI

The Compendium

In this compendium, we share every tiny thing we learn about Shortly -- all in one easy-to-use place. I say "we" because while I maintain this page, it's powered by the AI Content Dojo FB group — where we share tips and tricks to get the most from ShortlyAI.

I've also made it interactive to a degree. Click the "toggle compendium" button to switch between showing full instructions, or just the instruct commands.

Don't have Shortly? You're missing out. It's the most productive, flexible AI writing app on the market (as you can see in this compendium).

Dear reader, if you purchase Shortly using the button above, Shortly will give me a small commission to help support the AI Content Dojo and guides like this — at no extra cost to you. Thank you! 🙏

Tone & Voice

Before we dive into the various things ShortlyAI is capable of, let's think about tone… which comes from using adverbs to guide the AI into writing in the tone you want. Adverbs challenge Shortly to add tone and complex structure to an instruction without having to write complex instructions.

For example, let's take an ad for curtains:

These super soft and durable window curtains adopt special triple weave technology. The black light-blocking yarns are woven between the two colored yarns to ensure that the curtains have at least 85% shading ability ( Darker color curtains work better ). Our light blocking curtain with no liner, both side are the same color.

You might run /instruct [honestly summarize the above], which could return something like:

"As a person who has been looking for window curtains, I've found this ad to be of great help. It warns me that the darker color is best for blocking out light, which is also helpful since it doesn't have a liner. The triple weaving technique mentioned in the ad make me feel confident about these curtains' durability."

Use these in any of your instruct commands — and you can use adverbs in your article brief as well. Instead of just "write an article about…" you could use "honestly write an article about…"

Experiment with various adverbs to find different ways of producing the content you want. Here are a few you can try:

  • honestly
  • quickly
  • briefly
  • intensely
  • urgently
  • officially
  • delightfully
  • boldly
  • cheerfully
  • eagerly
  • elegantly
  • deftly
  • brightly
  • warmly

Here's a nice list of adverbs to discover more.

🙏 The idea for, and parts of this section of the Shortly Compendium were graciously provided by Dewayne Lehman.

Context

Context is the text content used by Shortly to produce the content you seek. By default, when you click "write for me," it will use the article brief, title, and all the content from your current cursor location up.

Inside of the refine commands like /shorten, /rewrite, and /expand, ONLY the content within the [] of the command is used.

/instruct is special. It uses everything in the [] just like the other commands, but also uses the content from its location in the document up.

Here's a more in-depth explanation of context.

YouTube video

Granular Control

Granular control means you can guide Shortly to either use, or not use, certain keywords in the content. This is done with ++ and -- in the instruct command.

For example: /instruct [write an article brief about ramen in Tokyo ++noodles +++tonkotsu ---bowl]

--keyword = please don't use this keyword
---keyword = absolutely do not use this keyword

++keyword = please use this word
+++keyword = please try your best to use this word

Here's an article diving into this more in-depth.

Ask for What You Want

Shortly is capable of deciphering the content you want based on natural language patterns. Meaning, you just ask for what you want — as if you turned to your AI writing assistant and asked in a normal voice.

For example, "please give me some headline ideas for working from home."

It's not a special "template" Shortly uses to write your content. Instead you're free to ask (and experiment) in ways that make sense to you.

In the rest of this compendium, I will share the various experiments and things the AI Content Dojo FB group and I have discovered we can "ask" Shortly for.

Here's an explainer video I did about asking:

YouTube video

Do the Dance

Instead of trying to generate content super fast and force Shortly to write 80%+ of your article, do the dance. The dance means you write some then let Shortly take over and finish your sentence.

The best way to think of this is to start writing until you get the point where you know what the rest of the sentence will be — but instead of writing it yourself, let Shortly write it. The bonus material it comes up with is often pure gold.

Here's another video where I go more in-depth on this (and mixing in /instruct commands).

YouTube video

Shortcuts; Work Fast

When you want to work fast Shortly has some keyboard shortcuts you can use. Highlight the text you want to run the command on then:

  • CMD+ENTER = /instruct
  • CMD+[ = /shorten
  • CMD+P = /rewrite
  • CMD+] = /expand

If you hold SHIFT when running the instruct command it will keep the command in place after it runs.

You can use /i as a shortcut too! /i [write a...] is the same as /instruct [write a...].

In Windows you use CTRL instead of CMD.

Accomplishments

Shortly is capable of helping you write accomplishments -- and the results seemingly follow (for the most part) the X,Y,Z formula "accomplished [X] as measured by [Y] by doing [Z]."

This gives Shortly the strong ability to help you create “about pages,” resumes, awards, corporate packages, executive summaries, etc. Also fantastic if you’re a member of the U.S. military and need to write bullets for your troop’s EPR and awards packages.

/instruct [write an accomplishment about being a member of the academic leadership association]

Result: "Selected as one of 275 participants nationwide for this 12-month professional development program for high-achieving diverse talent based on leadership potential and academic success."

Acronyms

In a sense this isn't a way for Shortly to give you a direct acronym, but I wanted to show this to you anyway. It illustrates the point that Shortly is ultra-flexible in what you can ask for.

Let's say you have a series of words and you're trying to find that last one to complete the acronym, like so:

Focus
Action
Success
T

You want the last word in the list to start with a "T" so it spells "FAST." You can ask Shortly to do this for you.

Focus
Action
Success
/instruct [finish the list with a single word starting with a T]

And the result was "Transformation." Perfect!

⭐️ Note, if you find on the first try Shortly doesn't give you word starting with a T, redo (CMD or CTRL+\).

🙏 The idea for, and parts of this section of the Shortly Compendium were graciously provided by Harry Heijligers.

AIDA

Attention Interest Desire Action (AIDA) is a popular copywriting formula for moving a reader along a journey to grab their attention, spark their interest, pique their desire, and then lead them to action.

Have you ever wanted to have your own backyard bird sanctuary without being obstructed by pesky squirrels? With Birdie, a revolutionary new feeder from Backyard Stars, that is now possible! For the first time ever you can view all of the action in HD right on your phone. And if you're not able to watch live, don't worry because it records too! You'll never miss out again with Birdie's 1080p HD camera and stunning design. It features an anti-squirrel cage that will keep those little bushy tailed creatures from stealing all your feed.

/instruct [write an AIDA for the above]

Results:

A: You love to watch the birds, but you hate when pesky squirrels show up.

I: Meet the amazing new Birdie feeder! With its revolutionary HD camera and anti-squirrel cage, you'll have the perfect bird sanctuary in your backyard without any interruption! And if that wasn't enough, it records all of its activity so you can enjoy it later too. Plus, this feeder is so stylish that you'll want to show it off to friends at BBQ's!

D: Forget about those old fashioned bird feeders. This is a top-of-the-line device with all of today's most innovative features. Watch live or record your favorite moments on your phone! And this feeder doesn't just look nice, it's also anti-squirrel, stainless steel, and weather resistant!

A: Get a Birdie today; You'll finally be able to enjoy your backyard with all the birds – minus the squirrels.

⚠️ It has been reported that Shortly often doesn't finish the full AIDA in one go. I have reported this to Shortly for resolution.

Answers

This one is really cool. Shortly can answer your questions -- and it does so in roughly the perfect length to be a featured snippet in Google. This means it tries to succinctly answer the question without being overly fluffy, nor be opinionated -- enticing Google to use it as a featured snippet, boosting traffic to your website.

Sometimes you'll get a list, sometimes a paragraph.

/instruct [write an answer for how to start a YouTube channel]

Results:

  • Sign into YouTube and click on the user icon at the top right of the screen.
  • Click on the gear icon to get to your account's YouTube Settings.
  • Click on Create a new channel.
  • Then choose 'Use a business or other name'
  • Add your Brand name and click create.

/instruct [write an answer for why does honey crystallize?]

Results: "Honey is a supersaturated sugar solution made up of water and a mix of sugars—mostly glucose and fructose. Over time, the sugar begins to 'precipitate out' of the solution, which means the water separates from the glucose, causing the sugar to take crystal form."

Article Brief

This will help you create a more enhanced article brief which will in-turn help Shortly write better articles for you.

/instruct [enhance this article brief about "how to wear an oversized sweater without looking huge"]

Results:
Please write an article about what's the worst part about winter? Your clothes! You're caught in a vicious cycle of layering, and it just never seems to end. One day you wake up feeling like an overstuffed sausage roll - but don't fret because there are ways to make your look more flattering.

BAB

The Before After Bridge (BAB) formula is a copywriting formula where you describe the before, help the reader imagine the after, and then explain how to get to the after from the before.

Before: Describe the world with problem A.
After: Imagine what it’d be like to have problem A solved.
Bridge: Here’s how to get there.

Birdie is our revolutionary new backyard bird feeder with a 360-degree ultra-HD camera, a stunning award-winning design that looks great in any yard, and a durable toughness to last the ages. And our patented squirrel-proof design will keep your bird feed safe from these witty critters.

/instruct [write a BAB for the above]

Results:

B: You love watching birds in your backyard, but you're tired of wasting money on birdseed that gets eaten by squirrels.

A: Imagine a feeder that lets you watch birds up close and personal from the comfort of your home or office. Birdie is an ultra-HD camera disguised as a feeder with a 360-degree view so you can see all the action at once. And since it's wireless, there are no wires to trip over or get tangled in when you move around.

B: With Birdie, enjoy beautiful HD videos and photos of your favorite backyard birds without worrying about feeding them! Our patented design keeps seed safe from pesky critters like squirrels while letting everyone else eat their fill.

Baby Names

Yes, Shortly can even help you come up with a name for your new baby. All you have to do is ask. And you can even ask in certain ways to find the name you like.

/instruct [Name my new baby girl]

Result: Christine. Or sometimes something like "There are a lot of names that I like. Some of them are Ariel, Flora, Izabella, and Hera."

Let's say you know what you want the name to start with.

/instruct [Give me some baby names that start with the letter C]

Result: Cade, Caleb, Camden, Cameron

Or taking it even one step further, what if you wanted names of a certain nationality?

/instruct [Give me some Indian baby girl names starting with the letter S]

Results: Sanya, Sanaya, Sati, Santana

🙏 The idea for, and parts of this section of the Shortly Compendium were graciously provided by Abhishek Agrawal.

Book Titles

So you've got your book almost complete and you're tired of staring at "Untitled" at the top... and all your creative juice has been spent writing the book.

Shortly can help with that. After a few paragraphs into your book, try this:

This is a practical CBT handbook written for people working with children and adolescents. The book provides a comprehensive overview of CBT theory and its application within schools. The book enables school staff to provide helpful strategies to manage young people’s emotions. It gives a background of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and techniques for applying strategies. The book also provides illustrative examples of how many, common emotional problems have benefited from the CBT approach.

This book is aimed at SENCOs, teachers, teaching assistants, therapists, Counsellors, Mentors, school nurses, mental health practitioners and other professionals who have a role in promoting the emotional wellbeing of young people.

/instruct [please write a book title for the above]

Result:

  • Working With Children And Adolescents: A Guide to Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy

And with a little creative use of the granular controls, … you get more emotional compelling titles like this:

This is a practical CBT handbook written for people working with children and adolescents. The book provides a comprehensive overview of CBT theory and its application within schools. The book enables school staff to provide helpful strategies to manage young people’s emotions. It gives a background of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and techniques for applying strategies. Excuses

Yes, we all need a good excuse every now and then don't we? Of course, Shortly can help you with that too.

/instruct [give me some homework excuse to my teacher for not completing my homework]

Results:

  • I was too busy.
  • My dog ate my homework.
  • I was watching TV and missed the due date.
  • The dog ate my homework
  • I didn't have time to do it because of an exam

🙏 The idea for, and parts of this section of the Shortly Compendium were graciously provided by Abhishek Agrawal.

Explain

If you get stuck when writing… perhaps something distracts your train of thought, you step away, and when you come back you don't have the momentum yet.

Or maybe you just need something explained real quick and you're not sure how to put it into words. Shortly can help.

/instruct [explain why using an outline helps write more efficiently]

Results:

The outline is used as a way to manage the post and organize all of the bits and pieces into something readable. It's also a helpful guide for when you're writing, providing content to fill in certain sections which may be easy or difficult for you.

When I use Shortly, I start with an outline to get an idea of what the article will be about. This could include where I want it to go, how it will flow or what sub-topics will be included.

Feature-Benefit

A “feature-benefit” is a way of taking the features of your product/service and mapping them into benefits the user will value. It’s a common copywriting task marketers need, especially for landing pages, advertising, brochures, etc.

Birdie, our revolutionary new backyard bird feeder with a 360-degree ultra-HD camera, attractive award-winning design, and is even squirrel-proof!

/instruct [write a feature-benefit for the above]

Result:

  • You'll never miss a moment of your backyard bird's life with our ultra-HD camera.
  • No more squabbles over who gets to feed the birds first, because you can watch them all from your phone or tablet!
  • You'll feel like you're right there in the backyard watching and feeding your favorite birds.
  • The design will make it an attractive addition to any garden and give you bragging rights among friends.
  • Protect your backyard from pesky squirrels

Headlines

Shortly has an incredible ability to help you design interesting headlines for your articles — especially when you use adverbs/adjectives to add tone (and the ---+++ tools to add more control).

Omakase, translated as “I will leave it to you,” is the traditional Japanese dining course where the chef provides a bespoke meal based on their expertise, seasonal ingredients, your preferences, and the local markets. It is an expression of trust. There is a longer translation of it too, “respectfully leaving another to decide what is best.” But I think the best way to think of omakase is it is an expert, master chef’s incredible skill and experience put into a course that you accept and enjoy. You get to say, “hi chef, give me your best,” and await the experience. No need to think about what to order or “what’s best here.” You give in to the chef’s meticulously crafted course. And love every minute of it (hopefully).

/instruct [help me think of an elegant headline for the above +++sushi]

Result: "An expert's best. Omakase sushi."

Introduction

Sometimes you need some help getting your article started. Shortly can help with that — but "introduction" has more power than that when you combine it with an outline.

/instruct [write an introduction for a blog post titled "how to find the best sushi in Tokyo" +++quality +++price]

Results:

It's no secret that Tokyo is an awesome city with many cool things to do. From shopping at Shinjuku to seeing the cherry blossoms in Ueno Park, there is something for everyone in this loveable city.

Tokyo also has its fair share of quality sushi joints. However, one might get lost and not know where exactly to go when looking for quality sushi. This article is meant to help you find quality locales around Tokyo as well as some of the more renowned places.

Use "Introductions" in an Outline

When you have an outline, use each sub-heading in the outline to get an introduction to each section of your article.

  1. The Best Places in Tokyo to Find Sushi
/instruct [write an introduction for "The Best Places in Tokyo to Find Sushi"]
  2. The Importance of Fresh Fish
/instruct [write an introduction for "The Importance of Fresh Fish"]
  3. Where to Find the Taste You Are Looking For
/instruct [write an introduction for "Where to Find the Taste You Are Looking For"]
  4. What Type of Sushi Do You Like? (Chef Recommendations)
/instruct [write an introduction for "What Type of Sushi Do You Like? (Chef Recommendations)"]
  5. What is Your Favorite Type of Sushi?
/instruct [write an introduction for "What is Your Favorite Type of Sushi?"]

Letters

Need to write a quick letter? Perhaps an email? Shortly can get one started for you too (and then you can use "write for me" to help finish the message).

/instruct [write a letter to a friend about wanting the new Apple product coming out in November]

Results:

I am writing to you because in just a few months, Apple will be releasing their newest product. I was wondering if you would like me to order one for you and then I'll take it to your house when it gets here.

I am very excited about this new product and I hope that you will be too! Will you be ordering one?

Cold, is the morning windHigh the clouds drop dew, And there's a sky to bind our eyes With colors of serene and blue. The hills are long, and dark and stillAs clouds pass on the sky, And still our wind whispers wild then still And cold the morning is. We show the world how fresh we are-The white oaks in new green dress; The redbuds with their wrinkled strength; The blue of hyacinths at our feet.

Questions

/instruct [give me some questions about "cast iron skillets"]

You can also get questions for content above the instruct command location, for example:

Homie's patented design pops up in seconds, and is wind resistant, water resistant, and cold-resistant. It has a 90kg weight capacity for comfortable sleeping. Plus it requires no tools or assembly. Protect yourself from the elements with a Homie.

/instruct [give me some questions for the above]

Results:

  • What does Homie stand for?
  • How much is a Homie?
  • Where can I buy a Homie?
  • What are the dimensions of a Homie?
  • How long is it to assemble a Homie from scratch?

Quintessence

The word quintessence is of Latin origin. It means the fifth element; a pure substance. Quintessence can also be interpreted as "the most perfect example of something".

It steers the message towards a particular audience. It tells the messenger who to focus their messaging towards in order to meet their goal. It is important for copywriting to prove why your message is the one your audience needs.

Here are a few examples how ShortlyAI can help with the right quintessence for your marketing message. The example text we'll use is about the keto diet:

"The ketogenic diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet that offers many health benefits. In fact, many studies show that this type of diet can help you lose weight and improve your health. Ketogenic diets may even have benefits against diabetes, cancer, epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s disease."

EXAMPLE #1: School Teachers

/instruct [rewrite the above towards people who are school teachers]

Results:

"The ketogenic diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet that offers many health benefits. In fact, many studies show that this type of diet can help you lose weight and improve your health. Ketogenic diets may even have benefits against diabetes, cancer, epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Many people are worried about the possible negative effects the ketogenic might have on their bodies without telling others about it first. This is one of the reasons why it's important to talk to your doctor before starting any new diet program or lifestyle change; they will be able to guide you through which diets are suitable for your body type and give you a lot of knowledge on how healthy they really are."

EXAMPLE #2: Entrepreneurs

/instruct [rewrite the above towards people who are entrepreneurs]

Results:

"Many people are under the false impression that being a business owner entails playing it safe, never taking risks, and loafing around on the couch all day. The truth is quite different. In reality, entrepreneurs take huge risks, have to work long hours, and invest themselves fully in their enterprises.

The ketogenic diet is a low-carb diet that offers many benefits for those entrepreneurs who are looking to transition from an unhealthy lifestyle to a much healthier one and shed excess weight quickly. In fact, many studies show that ketogenic diets can help such individuals lose weight and improve their health. Ketogenic diets may even have benefits against diabetes cancer epilepsy Alzheimer’s disease etcetera"
